The Dept. of Electrical & Electronics Engineering of VAST Technical Campus started its journey in the year 2013. It focuses on moulding the students to become a world class engineer with self-proficiency.
It is well equipped with highly commendable facilities and is effectively guided by a set of devoted and diligent faculty members having ample expertise in various fields of specializations, such as Power Electronics, Power Systems, Control Systems, Opto Electronics and Instrumentation. The back bone of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department is sophisticated and well-designed laboratories and workshops assisted by experienced technical staff.
EEE Association, TESLA provides a platform for students to exhibit their innovative ideas. The department maintains a strong teacher student relationship thereby promoting their curiosity in the dynamic field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

1. One day Industrial visit to the 110 kV sub-station, Kilimanoor
On 6th July 2015, the 5th semester EEE students had a 1-day Industrial visit to the 110 kV sub-station, Kilimanoor. They were accompanied by department faculty Mr. Rahul. S. The students were able to gather information about the power distribution and different types of breaker systems. The Chief Engineer shared his experience and expertise of power system network in the substation and the relay control panels with the students.
2. The inauguration of Electrical and Electronics Association TESLA
The inauguration of Electrical and Electronics Association TESLA was done by Padma Vibhushan Dr. G. Madhavan Nair on 20/08/2015. The function was arranged at the seminar hall. Student Secretary of TESLA, Mr. Shameem. A. S gave the welcome address. Chief Guest, Project Director Sri. R. Devarajan, Administrative Director Sri. D. Ramarajan, Principal Dr. Shobha Manakkal and HOD, Prof V. Subramony were present on the dias.
Principal delivered the presidential address. Following which, Dr. G. Madhavan Nair formally inaugurated the association TESLA by launching our website and logo. Then energy conservation club was inaugurated by Prof V Subramony. Finally, HOD thanked all the dignitaries that were present. During the afternoon session, various technical and cultural events were conducted under the banner TESLA.
A paper presentation programme was organized by the students of EEE branch under the banner of association TESLA on 26th February, 4th March and 11th March 2016 at the seminar hall in which Mr Shanil Krishna of S4 EEE, Mr Lagari. A of S2 EEE and Mr. Shijith. S of S4 EEE presented a paper about Microwave Generator, Cognitive Field Theory and Electric Locomotive Systems using overhead lines respectively. Assoc. Prof. Sabna. M(HOD, EEE), all faculty and staff of EEE along with all the EEE students were present for the talk.
3. One day workshop on “Introduction to Circuit design using PROTEUS software” on 12/8/2016
Department of Electrical & Electronics engineering and our Department association ‘TESLA’ organized an one day workshop on “Introduction to Circuit design using PROTEUS software” on 12/8/2016. The session were handled by Mr. Sudheer T M, Dept. of EEE, Nizwa College Of Technology, OMAN. The students from S5 & S7 EEE, S7 ECE were participated in the workshop. The teaching staffs from EEE & ECE department also took part in this program.
4. Students visited Energy Management centre Kerala on 5th November 2016
Fifth Semester Electrical and Electronics Students visited Energy Management centre Kerala on 5th November 2016. The opening remarks were done by Sri.Anil G Joiny Director & Head ET&R Division and followed by a class of general aspects of Energy Auditing by Mr. Suresh Babu B V, Energy Technologist. He pointed out the need for Renewable Energy Sources for future He mentioned the current energy scenario of India. Another session leaded by Mr.Sandeep K, Energy Technologist, EED Division about Energy Audit instruments. Afternoon session students were familiarized with instruments like Power Quality Analyzer, Anemometer, Thermal imager, Ultrasonic flowmeter etc. In the last session they demonstrated solar power plant and solar water heater at the roof top of EMC. This visit was coordinated by the Energy management Cell VAST TC coordinator Mr. Rahul S AP EEE.
5. Seminar on the power sector in Kerala
As part of First year KTU curriculum an expert session was arranged for the first year students of EEE. Session was handled by Project Director Engineer R. Devarajan. The class is about the power sector in Kerala. First year Staff advisors Mr.Rahul S and Ms. Nangha rajan arranged this session for the students. The session is held at Seminar hall of VAST TC on 11/11/2016.
6. Visit to Wind Power Plant at Nagercoil on 12th November 2016
Final and Pre-final year students of EEE Department Vidya Academy of Science and Technology visited Wind Power Plant at Nagercoil on 12th November 2016. Ramco Wind Power Plant, Muppanthal and nearer 110/11kV Substation were visited by students along with the faculties Mr.Rahul S AP EEE and Lab Staff Ms.Shaiba K S. The visit was very informative and students got chance to study more practical aspects of a Wind power plant operation. Operators guided the students to the inner part of wind plant tower and demonstrated with block diagrams. Dr. John Wiselin, HOD EEE arranged this visit for the students.
7. One day workshop on “Utility distribution network and backup power integration programme-2016”
The EEE Department of VAST-TC organised a one day workshop on “Utility distribution network and backup power integration programme-2016” at the campus on 19th November, 2016. Mr Sajin Babu, Project Engineer, Sigmos India, Cochin was the resource person for the event.
The Inaugural address was given by our Dr. T. Mathavaraj Ravikumar, HOD, ME Department. Presidential address given by Dr. M. C. John Wiselin HOD EEE Department and then the session was handled by Chief guest Mr. Sajin Babu. The workshop included included talk on the design of power distribution schematics (LT SLDs), in house site visit, design of standalone Solar power Systems, design of UPS / Inverter module and site visit to UPS Room.
Mr. Jai Kiran of S5 EEE delivered the vote of thanks. He expressed sincere gratitude to the students, parents, teaching and non-teaching staffs who were present on the occasion. The function was rounded off with an interactive session for the students and Mr. SajinBabu.
8. International Seminar on 'Emerging Trends in Energy Management (ETEM-2016)'
International Seminar on 'Emerging Trends in Energy Management (ETEM-2016)', an initiative by the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology-Technical Campus, Kilimanoor was conducted on 8th December 2016 at the campus.
The faculties and students from various Engineering Colleges were invited and the objective was to provide a platform for the academicians and students to exchange and share their new ideas in the contemporary and emerging trends in energy management.
The International Seminar activities started on time, by 9.30 pm, completing the registration formalities of all participants, within campus and outside campus. There were eighteen participants from various colleges and sixty eight participants in total. Resource Persons were welcomed to the campus by Dr. M C John Wiselin, HOD, EEE Department.
Inaugural Function was arranged at 9.30 AM at seminar hall. The event was blessed by eminent scholars from various fields, Mr K Senthil Kumar, Scientist – VSSC was the chief guest and Dr. Sisil Kumarawadu, Professor, Dept. of EEE, University of Moratuwa, Srilanka and Dr. M Marsaline Beno, HOD-Dept of EEE, St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering, Nagercoil also marked their presence as resource personnel for the seminar.
Dr. John Wiselin, HOD, EEE conveyed the welcome address followed by presidential address by Principal Prof. K Vijayakumar and Mr. K Senthil Kumar delivered the inaugural address. He also mentioned the importance of this seminar and advised the participants to make use of their precious time to the best and motivated participants to engage in research activities in energy management and renewable energy fields. Dr. Sisil Kumarawadu mentioned about the current trends in Smart grids and renewable generation possibilities. Mr. Sreedev Chandran, Asst.Prof. EEE gave the vote of thanks for the function.
First session on intelligent buildings commenced after the inaugural function and was delivered by Dr. Sisil Kumarawadu. There was a tremendous response from the participants. Remaining sessions were handled by Dr. M Marsaline Beno. He discussed in detail various topics of energy audit and management, energy efficient power system, energy efficient drives and electrical safety.
The valedictory function was held at 4.00 PM and Dr. M C John Wiselin delivered the vote of thanks. Certificates were distributed by Dr. M Marsaline Beno. The whole event was coordinated by Mr. Sreedev Chandran and Mr. Rahul S, faculty members of EEE department. A feedback session for the students was arranged and all gave positive feedback for the seminar and conveyed that they are expecting similar sessions in the near future.
9. Two day Workshop on Solar Photo voltaic systems
Two day Workshop on Solar Photo voltaic systems, an initiative by the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology-Technical Campus, Kilimanoor was conducted on 16th and 17th February 2017 in our campus.
The students from various Polytechnic Colleges were invited and the objective was to provide a platform to share the basic ideas about Solar Photovoltaic systems and its installation. The resource persons and Coordinators of this programme were Mr.Deepak V Dev and Mr.Rahul S.
The Workshop activities started on time, by 9.30AM, completing the registration formalities of all participants. There were Thirty participants and the programme started with an inaugural Function.
Inaugural Function was arranged at 9.30 AM at seminar hall. Dr.M.C.John Wiselin conveyed the welcome address followed by inaugural address by Principal Prof. K Vijayakumar. He also mentioned the importance of this workshop and advised the participants to make use of
their precious time to the best and motivated participants about the current trends and the necessity of solar photovoltaic system. He also mentioned the entrepreneurship opportunities in this field. Mr.Rahul S expressed vote of thanks for the function.
A tea break was arranged immediately after the inaugural function. Forenoon session on Energy Scenario, factors to be considered in site selection and measuring instruments in PV was delivered by Mr.Rahul S. and the afternoon session was handled by Mr.Deepak V Dev about the basic ideas of PV technology, parameters, design, effect of light intensity, effect of temperature etc. This is followed by a practical session regarding characteristics of PV cell coordinated by both the resource persons.
Second day Forenoon session mainly concentrated on battery, charge controllers and inverters. This session is handled by Mr.Rahul S and he gave a brief idea about battery characteristics, different charge controllers, types of inverters etc.
For the afternoon session we planned for design of PV standalone system. This topic is delivered and demonstrated by Mr. Deepak V Dev.
The valedictory function starts at 4 PM in which Dr.M.C.John Wiselin delivered the vote of thanks. One of our Department Student Shanil Krishna (S6 EEE) shared his views about our campus. Certificates are distributed by Dr.M.C.John Wiselin. In the feedback session students gave positive feedback about the workshop and they are expecting similar sessions in the near future. Electrical Inspectorate Kerala Organized an exhibition at Institute of Engineers Vellayambalam Trivandrum. First year EEE students visited this exhibition on 19/2/2017. In this exhibition famous electrical instrumentation companies, new startups, solar PV installation companies, KSEB, Kerala Fire force, shnieder etc were participated. Feedback from the students was positive and inspirational. Their Staff advisor Mr.Rahul S (AP EEE) coordinated the visit. Mr.Deepak V Dev, Ms.Aiswarya S, Ms.Arya Sunil and Mr.Rahul S were accompanied with the students.
Power Systems Lab:
Power system Laboratory comprises of protection, simulation, high voltage and machine related experiments. The equipments available are CTs and PTs, Relay test set, Over current, Over voltage, under voltage, distance, Earth fault and Static relays, Earth resistance test kit, Solid and Liquid dielectric test kit, Power factor improvement kit and power system software’s like E-Tap and MATLAB, etc. For student projects, the lab is used for power system modeling and analysis and power quality.
Power Electronics Lab:
Power Electronics Lab enables the students to get practical knowledge in the design and implementation of power electronics circuits. The lab is equipped with oscilloscopes, signal generators, voltage sources, multimeters, soldering stations, power electronic modules etc. It is used at undergraduate level for studying the voltage and current characteristics of thyristors and power transistors, demonstrating the use of thyristor as a half wave controlled rectifier, investigating the voltage and current waveforms for different loads and the effect of the freewheeling diode on the load and current and voltage waveforms.
Circuits & Measurements Lab:
Circuits & Measurements Lab enables the students to develop measurement systems for various electrical circuits and systems and to use different transducers for measurement of physical variables. The lab is equipped with LVDT, energy meters, ammeter, voltmeter, wattmeter, Vernier potentiometer, Wheastone’s Bridge, Kelvin Double bridge, Slidewire potentiometer, Phase Shifting Transformers, Current Transformer, Auto Transformer etc.
Electrical Machines lab
Electrical Machines lab is the core lab of electrical engineering department which is equipped with a number of AC and DC machines. The students are exposed to the best experimental practices on different types of machines considering the industrial relevance. The lab is equipped with DC series motor, DC shunt motor, DC compound motor, D.C machine sets, Alternator, Synchronous induction motor, Synchronous motor, Slip-ring induction motor, Squirrel cage induction motor, Pole changing induction motor, Induction generator, Single phase induction motor, Single Phase transformer, Three Phase transformer, Single phase and Three phase auto-transformer, Induction -D.C machine set.
Systems & Control Lab
Systems & Control Lab is equipped with Flow process control system , Synchro transmitters and receivers, AC servomotor, DC servomotor, Process control simulator, Programmable Logic controller (PLC) etc… The lab will help the students to get clear idea about the working of control systems and its components. It also helps the students to understand the modeling and design aspects of control system using MATLAB.
Electronic Circuits Lab:
Electronic Circuits Lab enables the students to develop measurement systems for various electrical circuits and systems and to use different transducers for measurement of physical variables. The Measurement and Instrumentation Lab is equipped with various transducers and instrumentation trainers, resistive, capacitive and inductive measurement systems, LVDTs and strain gauges, thermocouples and RTDs, Spot deflection Galvanometer, Weins Bridge Oscillator and Wheatstones Bridge. The lab also contains many basic electrical variables and time measurement equipments such as Frequency Counters, Digital Stopwatches, Digital Multimeters, Digital Anemometer, Digital Earth Tester, Electronic Energy Meter Electronic Standard Cells and Digital Oscilloscopes.
Electrical and Electronics Workshop
The Electrical Workshop is sufficiently outfitted with all the equipments and accessories for conducting practical classes in wiring practices as per BIS specifications. Models of modern switchgear and wiring accessories are deployed for the benefit of the students. The electronic side deals with the familiarization of Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO), Bread board connections, PCBs and Soldering station. The students are exposed to the current practices in domestic wiring and industrial installation.
