Civil Engineering is known to be the mother of all engineering disciplines. It is an all pervasive engineering profession, full of opportunities and challenges. Civil Engineering addresses to all aspects of the infrastructure facilities necessary for modern living such as buildings, transportation systems, water supply and waste water treatments, environmental protection etc. Civil Engineering actually plays the role of nation building. The construction boom in India and abroad provides plenty of opportunities for Civil Engineers. So VAST TC is trying to mould the students as world class Engineers.

The department also aims for a consistency in quality improvement by taking feedback from students, parents, alumni, industries and professional bodies.

DEPARTMENT MISSIONS

  • M1 : To provide an academic environment for the students for developing as capable professionals by empowering them with knowledge, skills, moral values and confidence
  • M2 : To prepare the students to become global leaders of tomorrow by promoting team work practices and inculcating communication and managerial skills.
  • M3 : To equip the students to accept new challenges by ensuring effective teaching and learning processes; involving them in research, consultancy and development activities; and providing them with exposure to the state of the art infrastructure. 

Programme Objectives (POs)

  • Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the Department

PEO 1 :   Our graduates will apply fundamental technical knowledge and skills to find creative solutions to technological challenges and problems in various areas of basic sciences and civil engineering and contribute to society and nation when solving engineering problems and producing reliable solutions.

PEO 2 :  Our graduates will contribute to the professional practice of their chosen field through effective communication, leadership, team work and service while exhibiting high ethical and professional standards in fulfilling their responsibilities to both employers and society.

PEO 3 : Our graduates will continue lifelong learning through professional activities and training and take up higher education, engage in research and development in civil engineering and allied areas of science and technology.

PSO 1: Analyse and design various structural components using both analytical and computational methods 

PSO 2: Identify the influence of various pollutants on environment, analyse and design the treatment and conveyance systems for handling sewage and water 

PSO 3: Comprehend the basic concepts of hydrological systems and be able to use hydraulic models to evaluate and quantify the effects of flood, runoff and rainfall.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 2025

1. SPEAKER IN FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Dr.K.Sargunan (HOD, CE) was the speaker in a One Week Faculty Development Programme on ‘Enhancing Infrastructure Longevity through Innovative Concrete Technology’, organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, K.S.R. College of Engineering, Tiruchengode, on March 24, 2025.

2. S1 CE RESULT (2024 - 2028 BATCH) TOPPERS

3. COMPLETION OF FDP & NPTEL CERTIFICATION COURSE

Dr.K.Sargunan (HOD-CE) successfully completed the 8 week NPTEL-AICTE Online Certification course on ‘Plastic Waste Management’ with a consolidated score of 77% in March 2025. He was also awarded an FDP certificate for the course.

4.·PAPER PUBLICATION

Dr.K.Sargunan (HOD-CE) published a paper on ‘Characterization of Nano - Clay Reinforced Polymer Composites: Enhancing Performance for Extreme Applications’ in ‘Journal of Polymer and Composites’ in the month of January, 2025.

5. MOU signed with CADD CENTRE, Kottarakara

The Department of Civil Engineering signed an MOU for 3DS MAX software, with CADD CENTRE, Kottarkkara. The program is aimed at providing Value-Added Course to the final year students of the department (2022 - 26 Batch).

6. Completion of Coursera Course - Build A Free Website with Word Press

Ms.Pooja M Vijay (AP, CE), Ms.Adheena V S (AP, CE), Ms.Anjali Saji (AP, CE) and Ms.Nayana Gopan (AP, CE) completed an online COURSERA course on BUILD A FREE WEBSITE WITH WORD PRESS on 23.04.2025, Wednesday.

Ms.Rini Madhavan Rajeev (AP, CE), Ms. Midhila M (AP, CE), Mr.Lenin Babu S (AP, CE) and Ms.Adheena V S completed an online COURSERA course on INVESTMENT RISK MANAGEMENT on 23.04.2025, Wednesday.

7. COMPLETION OF SHORT COURSE - INTERIOR DESIGN

Ms.Rini Madhavan Rajeev (AP, CE), Ms.Midhila M (AP, CE), Mr.Lenin Babu S (AP, CE), Ms.Anjali Saji (AP, CE) Ms.Pooja M Vijay (AP, CE), Ms.Adheena V S (AP, CE) and Ms.Nayana Gopan (AP, CE) completed an Online Short Course on INTERIOR DESIGN on 23.04.2025, Wednesday.

 

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH 2025

1. LIKHA 25 - TECH FEST

The Department of Civil Engineering conducted the Techfest “LIKHA 2025” in association with RACE 2025 on 20th February 2025. Department Techfest coordinator was Mr. Nithin A.V (Asst. Prof., CE). Techfest provides a platform for students to showcase one's unique talents and are important in improving the technical acumen of the young and creative minds, providing a break from the monotonous routine of evaluation and academics. LIKHA 2K25 received overwhelming responses in all its events and there were participants from polytechnic and other engineering colleges. These students were welcomed by our Director Dr. Shaji Sir and Head of the Department Dr.K.Sargunan.

  • EVENTS OF LIKHA - 2K25

CONSTRUCTO - 25

CONSTRUCTO-25 event was conducted on college ground of VAST TC on 20th of February 2025. Mr. Lenin Babu was the staff coordinator who helped in making the event a grand success along with student coordinator Indrajith (S6 CE). A first of its kind event mainly showcased construction machineries. There was display of a bulldozer is a powerful, tracked vehicle with a large, front-mounted blade, dump trucks a most common type of hauling equipment, Excavators with Backhoe and Telehandler.

NIRMAAN: A TIMELOURVE

Nirmaan event was conducted on SB 804 on 20th of February 2025. Ms. Nayana Gopan was the staff coordinator who helped in making the event a grand success along with student coordinator Aromal S (S8 CE). Students made still models and working models of based traditional building 

practices and diverse civil engineering structures. The expo included models of traditional buildings, types of construction materials and equipment, types of footings, generation of building, light house and London Bridge. The model of London tower bridge done by S4 CE students was the main highlight as it was a working model done in collaboration with S4 ECE students. Our students made different types of footings by concrete casting along with their Skelton. There was display of construction materials like cement, sand, aggregates, fly ash, GGBFS etc., and construction equipment like trowel, vibrator.  Generation of building is a project done S2 CE students. This event showcased the models from old thatched house to modern multi-stories buildings.

BUILD-OFF:

BUILD-OFF was one of the main projects showcasing the modern structures and construction practices, which was conducted on SB 804. Ms. Anjali Shaji was the staff coordinators who helped in making the event a grand success along with student coordinators Alfiya (S8 CE) and Jesna Fathima (S4 CE). The expo included student models like Eco Metropolis 2.0, Cable suspended bridge, cross section view of a plan of a residential building and sustainable habitats by S2 CE students.

ECO VISTA 2.0

The Eco Vista 2.0 event highlighted the beauty and structural perfection of bamboo works and project related to Environmental Engineering and was conducted in SB 805. MsAdheena V S was the staff coordinator who helped in making the program a grand success along with student coordinators Adarsh (S4 CE) and Harsha of S8 Civil. A bamboo hut and a sustainable bamboo bridge using locally sourced bamboo transcends aesthetics to engage students and visitors. A working model water treatment plant was displayed by S4 CE Students.

HYDROSTRUCT

The HYDROSTRUCT event highlighted the student’s models related to hydraulic structures and was conducted in SB803. Ms. Pooja M Vijay was the staff coordinator who helped in making the program a grand success along with student coordinators Fayas (S6 CE) and Navneeth of S4 Civil. Aqueduct model was displayed by students. Dams were made by using concrete. Proper curing time was given for the setting of concrete. It was really a massive and attractive structure. Along with dam, aqueduct was made out of wooden boards. The hard work done by students was clearly visible on the structure and gained immense appreciations for its perfection. Another major structure constructed was working model of stepped spillway, that astonished the minds of audience by it’s structural perfection.

MARGA

The Marga event was based on advanced transportation systems and methods was conducted on SB 802 and Ms. Rini Madhav Rajeev was the staff coordinator who helped in making this program a grand success along with the student coordinator Sarath (S6).  The event showcased life size model of a railway station platform by S6 CE students with ticket counter, track and signal systems. The models were built from scraps and sustainable materials. S4 CE students build a road intersection with roundabouts and flyovers displaying their knowledge and skills in transportation engineering. A model of different transportations modes were also displayed by S6 CE students where they shown bridge, road and tunnel passage.

BUILD-VR

The Build VR event was based virtual reality in building modelling and simulation and methods was conducted on SB 805 and Ms.Midhila M was the staff coordinator who helped in making this program a grand success along with the student coordinator Anuja Babu (S8).  This event attracted all age groups from school students to senior faculties as it showcased 3D walk-through of seven wonders of modern world.

CAD-PUZZLE

One of major highlight of LIKHA 25, was the participation of diploma final year students in various inter-college events. The Cad-puzzle, an inter-college building plan jigsaw puzzle event was conducted on SB 806 at 10.00 am. Ms. Pooja M Vijay was the staff coordinator who helped in making this program a grand success along with the student coordinator Nikhil P S (S6). There were 14 participants from various polytechnic and B.Tech colleges and Rafna Basheer of  SNPTC Kottiyam secured First Prize and Geethu M Nair of S4 CE VAST TC secured second place. Both were rewarded with cash prize and all participants received certificates from the Department of Civil Engineering.

CAD-MANIA

The Cad-mania, an inter-college Autocad competition event was conducted on CAD LAB ME at 11.00 am. Ms.Adheena V S was the staff coordinator who helped in making this program a grand success along with the student coordinator Mubarakali (S6). There were 18 participants from various polytechnic and B.Tech colleges and Gopika R S of SNPTC Kottiyam secured First Prize and Aneesh A of MGMPTC Kilimanoor secured second place. Both were rewarded with cash prize and all participants received certificates from the Department of Civil Engineering.

FUN ZURA 2.0

The games corner was set up in the Boy’s Common Room, SB815. It was really active on both days of tech fest. The staff coordinator Mr. Lenin helped us in making the event a grand success along with the Student coordinator Joji (S8 CE). Many school students participated in the games set up in the zone and got variety of gifts.

2. SEMINAR ON BIM FOR INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN AND CONTRACTING

The Department of Civil Engineering organized an interactive seminar session for the Third and Second year students (2022 and 2023 Batch) of the department, ‘BIM for Infrastructure Design and Contracting’ on 07/03/2025, Friday from 2.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. The event was organized by Ms. Pooja M Vijay (Asst. Prof - CE). A total of 64 students attended the event, which was held at the ME Seminar Hall. The session was handled by the guest, Mr. Rahul S, Junior BIM Application.  Engineer in BIMLABS GLOBAL, Kazhakoottam. All the faculty members of the department played a major role in the successful completion of the program.

3.  ALUMNI MEET – 2K25

The Department of Civil Engineering and Association of Vidya Alumni, Kilimanoor organized an Alumni meet for the graduated students of the department “ALUMNI MEET- 2K25” on 16.03.2025, Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by lunch. The Department Alumni Coordinator Ms. Adheena V S (Asst. Prof - CE) coordinated the event. 35 graduated students from Batches 2015 – 2019 to 2020 – 2024 attended the event, which was held at the ME Seminar Hall. All the faculty members of department played a major role in the successful completion of the programme.

4. PATENT PUBLICATION

Dr. K.Sargunan (HOD, Department of CE) published an Indian Patent on ‘A Novel Eco-Friendly Concrete Mixtures for Sustainable Infrastructure’ dated 21/03/2025.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2025

1. Placement offers at SEAMLESS ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS

A total of four S8 students, Mr. Aromal S S, Ms. Alfiya N S, Ms. Ashik J and Ms. Adithya Mohan of the Department of Civil Engineering (2021 - 25 Batch) got placed at SEAMLESS ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS.

 

2. Placement offers at AVS Associates

The Department of Civil Engineering is proud to announce that 3 students of the final year batch (2021 - 25 Batch) received placement offers from AVS Associates.

 

3. Workshop on TOTAL STATION SURVEYING - Phase II

The Department of Civil Engineering organized the second phase of the interactive one day workshop on "Total Station Surveying" for final-year Diploma students from S N Polytechnic College, Kottiyam on 14th February, 2025, which commenced at 11:00 a.m. This session focused exclusively on practical training and hands-on experience. A total of 50 students attended the session. Mr.AjiKrishnan (TI, CE Dept.) and Pooja M S (TI, CE Dept.) led the session. The first phase of the session was conducted on 18th December, 2024.

 

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY 2025

1. Faculty Development Programme on “Challenges and Future Directions of AI in Energy Systems”

Mr. Lenin Babu S (AP, CE) and Ms. Midhila M (AP, CE) and Ms. Adheena V S (AP, CE) successfully participated & completed five days faculty development program on “Challenges and Future Directions of AI in Energy Systems” organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Nehru College of Engineering and Research Centre, from 09/12/2024 to 13/12/2024.

2. Faculty Development Programme on “Emerging Trends in Civil Engineering for Disaster Management”

Mr. Lenin Babu S (AP, CE) and Ms. Midhila M (AP, CE) successfully participated & completed six days faculty development program on “Emerging Trends in Civil Engineering for Disaster Management” organized by JNTUA College of Engineering, from 23/12/2024 to 28/12/2024.

  

3. Faculty Development Programme on ‘Green Energy Solutions: Building a Sustainable Carbon Neutral World’ 

Dr. K. Sargunan (HOD, Dept. of CE) has successfully completed a six day Faculty Development Program on ‘Green Energy Solutions: Building a Sustainable Carbon Neutral World’ at College of Engineering, Muttathara, from 13.01.25 to 18.01.25.

4. Seminar on “CAREER AFTER B.TECH CIVIL”

The Department of Civil Engineering organized an interactive seminar session for the third and final year students (2021 and 2022 Batch) of the department, ‘CAREER AFTER B.TECH CIVIL’ on 08/01/2025, Wednesday, from 1.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. Ms.Midhila M (Asst. Prof ., CE) organized the event. A total of 69 students attended the event, which was held at the ME Seminar Hall. The session was handled by the guest, Ms.Jeeva Vijayan, Assistant Professor, Civilianz. All the faculty members in the department played a major role in the successful completion of the programme. The session started with a welcome speech at 1.30 p.m. by Dr.K.Sargunan (HOD, Dept. of CE). He introduced the speaker to the students with a delightful speech. The event coordinator then welcomed the students, speaker and faculty members.
