ABOUT US

Civil Engineering is known to be the mother of all engineering disciplines. It is an all pervasive engineering profession, full of opportunities and challenges. Civil Engineering addresses to all aspects of the infrastructure facilities necessary for modern living such as buildings, transportation systems, water supply and waste water treatments, environmental protection etc. Civil Engineering actually plays the role of nation building. The construction boom in India and abroad provides plenty of opportunities for Civil Engineers. So VAST TC is trying to mould the students as world class Engineers.

The department also aims for a consistency in quality improvement by taking feedback from students, parents, alumni, industries and professional bodies.

DEPARTMENT MISSIONS

  • M1 : To provide an academic environment for the students for developing as capable professionals by empowering them with knowledge, skills, moral values and confidence
  • M2 : To prepare the students to become global leaders of tomorrow by promoting team work practices and inculcating communication and managerial skills.
  • M3 : To equip the students to accept new challenges by ensuring effective teaching and learning processes; involving them in research, consultancy and development activities; and providing them with exposure to the state of the art infrastructure.

  • Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the Department

PEO 1 :   Our graduates will apply fundamental technical knowledge and skills to find creative solutions to technological challenges and problems in various areas of basic sciences and civil engineering and contribute to society and nation when solving engineering problems and producing reliable solutions.

PSO 1: Analyse and design various structural components using both analytical and computational methods 

PSO 2: Identify the influence of various pollutants on environment, analyse and design the treatment and conveyance systems for handling sewage and water

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF JULY 2021

1.Webinar on "Civil Engineering Software - An Insight"

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a free webinar on "Civil Engineering Software - An Insight" for the final year diploma students on 4th June 2021 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The session was handled by Mr. Jithinlal M. P., Senior Engineer, Business Support, CADD center - Punalur. E-cetificates were provided to all the participants.

2. Webinar on "Journey through Concrete"

The Department of Civil Engineering conducted an online technical webinar on ‘Journey through Concrete’ for final year students of our college on 12th June, 2021. A total of 42 participants including students and faculty members attended the webinar. The session was handled by Mr. Shyju Nair, CEO of DH Academy. The workshop was hosted on the Zoom platform. The programme started at 10:00 AM and got extended to 11:30 AM. A feedback form was collected to evaluate the effectiveness of the session and all responded positively for the attended session. The workshop was organised by Ms. Vaisakhi Nair V S (Asst. Prof – CE) along with the support of the faculties in Department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Vijayakumar K (HOD – CE).

3. Workshop on "Fusion 360"

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a workshop on "FUSION 360" on 2nd June 2021 at 10 am. The session was handled by Mr. Vishnu Murukan, Application Engineer, Intercad Systems Pvt. Ltd. The evvent was conducted in Google meet platform.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2021

1.Future and Opportunities in Civil Engineering Software

As part of admission activity, the Department of Civil Engineering conducted a Webinar on ‘Future and Opportunities in Civil Engineering Software’ for newly joined Civil Engineer students on 5th October, 2021. The webinar was handled by Ms. Treesa Jose (Team Leader, Intercad Systems Pvt Ltd). The webinar was hosted in Google meet platform. The programme started at 6:00 PM and got extended to 7:10 PM. The session gave a brief idea on the available Civil Engineering Software in the market and their suitability in various Civil Engineering field. The presentation part of the webinar got completed by 7:05PM and the query session lasted for 5 min and was handled perfectly. The webinar was organized by Ms. Swathy Krishna V R (Asst. Prof - CE) along with the support of the faculty members in Department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Vijayakumar K (HOD - CE). Upon sharing the posters, 34 students attended the same.

2.National Webinar on : Construct a strong Engineer within You

As part of admission activity, the Department of Civil Engineering had conducted a webinar on ‘Construct A Strong Engineer Within You’ for newly joined Civil Engineer students on 16/09/2021. Upon sharing the posters, 30 students attended the same. The webinar was handled by Mr. Vijesh M Nair , National Head - India, Cadd Centre Training Services Pvt Ltd. The webinar was hosted in Google meet platform. The programme started by 5:00 PM and got extended to 6:15 PM. The presentation part of the webinar got completed by 6:00PM and the query session lasted for 15 min and was handled perfectly. The webinar was organised by Meenu Rachel Jose along with the support of the faculties in Department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Vijayakumar K, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering.

3.Meet Our Alumni

As part of admission activity, the Department of Civil Engineering had arranged an interaction session ‘Meet Our Alumni’ for newly joined Civil Engineer students on 20/09/2021. Upon sharing the posters, 32 students attended the same. The session was handled by our Alumni students, Mr. Jaikishan C J, Managing Director, RoBoS Builders and Designers Pvt Ltd and Ms. Neema S S, Assistant System Engineer, Tata Consultancy Services. The webinar was hosted in Google meet platform. The programme started by 7:00 PM and got extended to 8:10 PM. The presentation part of the webinar got completed by 7:55 PM and the query session lasted for 15 min and was handled perfectly. Mr. Jaikishan C J shared his experiences of his student life and he also mentioned the vital role played by Civil department in making him a successful engineer. Ms. Neema S S also shared her experiences as a student and also mentioned how she was moulded up by Civil Department in getting placement in TCS. Both mentioned the importance of maintaining a relaxed and systematic approach towards goal achievements. The students interacted with the alumni by asking queries at the end of the session. The webinar was organised by Mr. Hariprasad T R along with the support of the faculties in Department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of  Prof. Vijayakumar K, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2021

1.Let’s Sing

 

Department of Civil Engineering had arranged a musical interaction session ‘Let’s Sing’ for newly joined Civil Engineer students on 29/09/2021. Upon sharing the posters, 28 students attended the same. The session was handled by Ms. Revathy S J, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, VAST-TC. The session was hosted in Google meet platform. The programme started by 7:00 PM and got extended to 8:00 PM.

The resource person aimed to uplift the confidence of the students throughout the session. The students participated with enthusiasm and demanded for more programmes in future. The webinar was organised by Mr. Jithin Prem S along with the support of the faculties in Department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Vijayakumar K, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering.

2.A Guidance Programme for Career Opportunities After B.Tech

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a Webinar on ‘A Guidance Programme for Career Opportunities After B.Tech’ for final year and pre-final year Civil Engineering students on 8th October ,2021.The webinar was handled by Mr. Pradeep Raghu(Faculty, Ace Academy, Hyderabad). The webinar was hosted on the Zoom platform. The programme started by 11:00 AM by welcoming the resource person by Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof - CE). In the session Mr. Pradeep Raghu gave the emphasis on the importance of competitive exams and the methodology to crack the same. He also gave the students the idea on the importance of upcoming Gate exams and how to approach the same for achieving higher Gate Scores. The presentation part of the webinar got completed by 12:00 PM and the query session lasted for 15 min and was handled perfectly. Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof - CE) gave concluding remarks on the effective session at the end of the webinar. The webinar was organised by Mr. Jithin Prem S (Asst. Prof - CE) and Mr. Lenin Babu S (Asst. Prof - CE) along with the support of the faculty members in Department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Vijayakumar K(HOD-CE). A total of 82 students attended the same.

3.WORKSHOP ON SCULPTING WASTE MATERIALS

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a webinar ‘Sculpting Waste Materials’ for the upcoming Civil Engineering students (2021 – 25 Batch). The event was organized online, via the platform Google Meet, on 18th October, 2021 from 7:00 p. m. – 8:00 p. m. The resource person for the session was Mr. Amal Raj U R, a proud VAST TC alumnus, currently working as a Design Engineer at Equilibrium, Kollam. The session mainly focused on model making of houses and other constructions using easily available materials. This would give the young minds an insight into the basic and common dimension details of different structures around us, as the first step for model making involves identifying the required dimensions from already available plans. The collection of the raw materials required for the project and the scaling down of the dimensions to build the model are the next steps. The details of the accessories required for the creation of the model were also discussed in the session. The students were also given an idea about the importance of using easily available waste materials like cloth, plastic, twigs and natural colors for making models. The session ended at 8:00 p. m. with a discussion session of the students with the speaker which involved questions relating to the use of various household materials for model making. The students gave an excellent feedback of the session as it helped them improve their creativity skills which shall help them in participating in exhibitions, competitions and technical events in the future related to Civil Engineering. The session was coordinated by Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof – CE), had a total participation of 45 students.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2021

1.FRESHER’S DAY CELEBRATION @VAST TC

The Associations of VAST TC organized a Freshers Day Programme for newly joined students (2021-2025 Batch). The purpose of Fresher’s party is to welcome new students in a friendly atmosphere and to encourage their creativity to boost their confidence. It is the day where senior students and newly joined students unite and celebrate being part of the college.
RACE:The final year students of the Department of Civil Engineering conducted a Freshers day programme for the first year students (2021 -25 Batch). The event was organized by the Civil Engineering Association ‘RACE’ on 8th December 2021 at SB 812 from 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. The programme schedule involved the inauguration of the programme by Prof. K. Vijayakumar (HOD - CE) and events to extend a warm welcome to the first year students. The day concluded with positive feedback from the freshers. The faculty members present for the event were Mr. Lenin Babu S (Asst. Prof. - CE), Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof. - CE), Ms. Meenu Rachel Jose (Asst. Prof. - CE), Ms. Swathy Krishna V R (Asst. Prof. - CE), Ms. Jayitha V Mohan (Asst. Prof. - CE) and Ms. Fathima Sherin T (Asst. Prof. - CE).

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF MAY  2022

1. CIVISTIA 2.0

The college level technical fest was conducted at Vidya Academy of Science & Technology Technical Campus,  Kilimanoor under  the banner of VYUHA 2K22 on 6th May, 2022. Under the banner of Civistia 2.0, the Department of Civil engineering presented various events such as Civil Q:- technical quiz competition, Graphics :- perspective drawing competition, Canvas Kids pencil drawing competition and Paper presentation competition. A lot of models, craft works etc exhibited during Civistia 2.0.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER  2022

1.ONLINE CAREER GUIDANCE SESSION

The Department of Civil Engineering at VAST TC organized an online webinar ‘STEPPING STONES’ in association with CADD Center, Kottarakkara for the upcoming 2022 CE batch. The programme was intended to give the students a general awareness on Civil Engineering, the job opportunities and upcoming innovations in the field. The event was organized on 29th September, 2022 via the online platform google meet from 11.00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Mr. Maneesh Kumar C. S., Structural Engineer and CEO of Strudco Services LLP. was the resource person for the programme. A total of 36 students participated in the interactive session, sharing their ideas and learning new concepts. The event received positive feedback from all the participants. The event was coordinated by Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof - CE).

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE  2023

1.ALUMNI MEET-23

The Department of Civil engineering and Association of Vidya Alumni, Kilimanoor organized an Alumni meet for the graduated students of the department named ‘ÁLUMNI MEET - 23’ on 11.06.23 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. followed by lunch. The event was coordinated by the department alumni coordinator Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof - CE). A total of 56 graduated students attended the event which was held at the ME Seminar Hall. All the faculty members of the department were part of the success of the programme.Inaugural Session (9: 30 a. m. - 10:00 a. m.)All the guests were welcomed by Ms. Anitha Vijayan (Trustee Coordinator, VAST TC) with a delightful speech at 9:30 a. m. This was followed by the inaugural of the event by Administrative Director, Brig. K. Shaji at 9: 45 a.m. In his inauguration speech he highlighted the importance of alumni in the growth of an institution. In the presidential address at 10: 00 a. m. by Prof. K. Vijayakumar (Academic Coordinator), the previous Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, he stressed the importance of strengthening bonds between students and expressed his hope in making this an annual event.Interactive Session (10: 00 a .m. - 1:00 p. m.) Many of the alumni students came forward to share their experiences at their alma mater. They expressed their interest in supporting the current students of the departments by providing internships and site visits at their firm in the future. The student representatives for each batch of the department alumni association were also selected. They thanked the organisers of the event and pledged to be always part of the growth of the institution. After a short tea break, the alumni gathered together to organise some informal games and entertainment sessions. The session ended at 12: 45 p. m. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Lenin Babu (Asst. Prof - CE) and the session ended at 1:00 p. m.The alumni appreciated the organisers for the event and expressed their gratitude in being able to meet and interact among themselves. They also promised to organise more such events in the future to carry on the legacy of their department and thereby the institution. After a scrumptious meal for lunch the graduation ceremony ended at 1: 30 p.m.

2.ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil Engineering in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of VAST TC organized a seminar titled “Entrepreneurship Development in the field of Civil Engineering” on 3rd June, 2023. The resource person of the event was Mr. Jai Kishan, Managing Director, RoBoS Builders and Designers Pvt Ltd. The event was coordinated by Mrs. Fathima Sherin T, Assistant Professor, Civil Department. The session officially began with a welcome address by Dr. K Sargunan, Associate Professor, Civil Department. The session was given to the civil engineering students of 2nd year and 3rd year. Participants engaged actively during the session and it was followed by a Q&A session. Feedback was collected from every participant.The resource person explained about his venture RoBoS Builders and Designers Pvt Ltd.The resource person gave a highly informative presentation and talk on the concepts of entrepreneur developments, the needs, challenges and scope in civil engineering field.The resource person provided in-depth explanations about the requirements and skills to be acquired by the students to get placed in Construction companies and to become an entrepreneur.The sessions brought a plethora of details. The participants gained knowledge about the new trends and technologies, skillset and technical requirements in the field of civil engineering for entrepreneur development.Throughout the sessions, the participants were really engaged and motivated. Participants in the feedback sessions responded favorably, stating that the content was pertinent and delivered in the appropriate manner.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER  2023

1. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BRIDGE STRUCTURE FROM MONOPILE TO SUPERSTRUCTURE

The Department of Civil Engineering in association with RACE, of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology Technical Campus, Kilimanoor organized an online Expert Talk for the final year students of the department, ‘General Discussion of Bridge Structure from Monopile to Superstructure’ on 25.10.23, Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The speaker of the event was Mr. Dinesh Balu, Monopile Structural Engineer, Mumbai Coastal Road Project, Mumbai. The online session, via Google Meet, was coordinated by Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof - CE) and attended by 26 students. All the faculty members of the department played a major role in the successful completion of the program.

2. THRIVING IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil Engineering, in association with RACE, of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology Technical Campus, Kilimanoor organized an Expert Talk for the final year students of the department, ‘From Student to Professional: Thriving in Civil Engineering’ on 29.09.23, Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The speaker of the event was Er. Prajeesh, Managing Director, Rajadhani Construction & Rajadhani Training Academy, Thiruvananthapuram. The session was coordinated by Mr. Lenin Babu (Asst. Prof - CE) and attended by 53 students. 1.Alumni Interaction Session ‘INSPIRING ALUMNUS’

The Department of Civil Engineering and Association of Vidya Alumni, Kilimanoor,  VASTTC, organized an interactive session with alumni for the final year students of the  department ‘INSPIRING ALUMNUS’ on 06.03.24, Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30  p.m. The Department Alumni Coordinator Ms. Rini Madhavan Rajeev (Asst. Prof - CE) coordinated the event. A total of 33 final year students attended the event, which  was held at the CE Seminar Hall (SB812). The session was handled by the guest, Ms.  Mariyath Yousaf (alumnus of 2018 – 2022 batch), final year post-graduation student of Geoinformatics from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram. The session  started with a welcome speech at 2:00 p. m. by Dr. K. Sargunan (HOD – Dept. of  CE). The speaker began the session highlighting the future career and higher education  opportunities in India and abroad with a neat and eye catching powerpoint presentation.  She also encouraged the students to always be in touch with their alma mater. Ms. Avani  A (S8 CE) delivered the vote of thanks and then the session ended at 3: 30 p.m.

2.EXPERT TALK on Opportunities After Engineering through Competitive Examinations

The Department of Civil Engineering organized an Expert talk on “Opportunities After Engineering through Competitive Examinations” for students of all semesters of the department on 08.03.24, Friday from 10:00 a. m. to 11:00 a. m. The event was coordinated by Ms. Keerthi Devi I S (Asst. Prof - CE). A total of 76 students attended the event, which was through the Zoom platform.. The session was handled by Mr. Kausik A, Sr. Faculty Member, Ace Engineering Academy, Hyderabad. All the faculty members of the department played a major role in the successful completion of the programme. Session highlighted the future higher education opportunities in India through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) and IES (Indian engineering services).
